Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

2012 Turkey Day Regatta

The weather prediction was for light winds and rain but only the light wind showed upt. The breeze was from the southeast at 4-8 knots with a little chop at times. There were 10-15 degree shifts that would come in, stay a while, then leave. The course was a double sausage finishing on the wind for the first race, the next three were single sausages also finishing on the wind.

Race one saw Kirsten Burch with Mike get an excellent start and work the first place like a pro. Randy and Kathryn Smith chased them all the way to get second place. Chris Messano with Doug Baird did a fine job of coming from back in the fleet to get third.

Race two saw Dave West with Mark Roberts  do some very fine downwind work to win the race. Burch was right in there to get second. Pax Davis with George Gerwe followed West’s course at the leeward mark to get third place

Race three had West performing his downwind magic and bringing home another winner. Smith sailing very well grabbed second place. Don Whelan with Alan Johnson sailed their best race to get third place.

Race four was Burch from the start, never to be caught and finishing day one with another first place. Messano was second as he did some nice downwind work. West was third giving him the lead for the first day. However when race five is sailed there will be one throwout.

Day two was a beautiful sunny, relatively warm day with a South-West breeze at around 12 Knots. All the courses were sausages once around finishing on the wind. There was a slight swell with small waves.

Race Five was very close at the first weather mark. There was a foul that affected a lot of Mercs. Whelan dropped out. Smith who has been going very fast got through it all and won the race. Messano was second followed by West.

Race six was OK until the finish. The finish flag had dragged almost halfway to the leeward gate and obviously really adjusted the finishes. This race was wisely not counted.

Race seven was between three Mercs. West won followed by Whelan and Burch. The rest of the fleet had retired thinking the six races for the regatta were completed. West won the regatta, regardless of the course activities, sailing very well. Burch hung in there and showed the gang some real talent by placing second. Many thanks to the Alamitos Bay YC for a truly great weekend.

2012 PERRY CUP OPENER

On a beautiful Monterey day, warm with the sun shining, Eleven Mercs raced in winds 4-10 knots, but mostly in the six range. The courses for all the races were sausages, three times around finishing downwind.  For those of you who have raced in Monterey, every now and then a shear develops where there is a northerly wind on one side of the calm and a west wind on the other side. The first race was no different. There were four or five Mercs over early at the start, but with the shear, those that took full advantage of the north side made up their early mistake. Pax Davis with Dave Morris, were over early and sailed to the northerly and were untouched to win the race. Doug Baird with Mike Dick had the best start carried the second place to the finish. Myron Ericksen with Todd Austin used the the shear to his advantage to get third place. Jim and Kathy Bradley were fourth and new Merc owner, Dana and Kane Russell also used the shear to place fifth.

Race two the breeze was up to the high side, but the seas were still pretty flat, but Baird turned it on and after the first lap led the fleet to place first. Bill Worden with Beeper Moore placed second easing out Randy Smith with John Hayes who took third. Mark and Liz Chandler finished fourth followed by Bradley in fifth place.

Race three the breeze dropped to mid range and Smith was able to stay in front of the fleet the entire race to claim first place. Davis and Baird duked it out the entire race with Davis getting second and Baird third. Bradley was fourth in a close race with Worden, who placed fifth.

We had a very nice Merc class dinner, at the yacht club, put on by the two Pattis, Womble and McAleer. Many thanks to MPYC for the use of the club for the weekend.

The project for day two was to find some wind to race in. Dick Clark, PRO, found a nice spot off Lover’s Point on a very warm sunny day. The water was smooth on the starboard tack, but a little lump created by earlier off shore winds. The wind direction was like a lake, big shifts, with velocity about 4-8, mostly on the lower range. All the races would be a twice around sausage, finishing downwind.

Race four had south in the wind and favored a quick tack to port. Those that went closer to shore did a little better. Where inshore paid off was on the runs. Bradley played the wind very well to win the race. Hal and Ann McCormack did an exceptional job on the runs to place second. They were followed by Smith, Davis and Worden in that order to round out the top five.

Race five illustrated the changing conditons as the race started in a light breeze. With the group pretty close together after the first lap, Chandler and Erickson with Steve Kraft  spotted something on the outside and cruised by everybody with Chandler winning and Erickson placing second. Baird led the rest to the finish followed by McCormack and Bradley to complete the top five.

Race six the course heading was changed. To get to the windward mark, the long port tack was into the lump. Most of the group went out on port. Those that started clean off the line were able to stay on starboard. This soon became a very close three boat race. In the end Davis won followed by Worden and Baird. Smith led the rest of the fleet in followed by Chandler.

Congratulation to Baird who won the regatta and sewed up the Travel Trophy for 2012.Erickson won the Silver fleet followed by Dana Russell.

Many thanks to Dick Clark, John Laughton and Marty Gingras for the excellent RC work. The Wombles always do a fine job of patrolling the course.

2012 Joe Logan Regatta

On a beautiful sunny day where the westerly didn't arrive till one thirty seven Mercs raced on a double sausage with a downwind finish. The breeze at a peak might have hit 15 knots but was pretty much averages 12 knots range. A big ebb tide built a short chop that was brutal in spots in race three. In racing in ebb tides the fleet stays very close together at the rounding marks. The leeward gates were set so that one direction was favorable to round. This created very close roundings and finishes at each mark and finish.

Race one got off fast with Jim and Kathy Bradley leading most of the way and finishing first. Followed closely by Randy Smith with John Hayes for second and Pax Davis with Aaron Lee were third. Bradley got in some tight quarters and after the day was completed went to arbitration with Doug Baird. Bradley had not agreed to any penalty so he withdrew. Baird with Mike Dick placed third as everybody moved up a place.

In race two Smith got a great start as the fleet kind of hung back. He went on to win the race easily. Baird placed second. The leaders tend to go for the back eddy on the shore on the runs but those who ran straight into the ebb favoring the shore slightly tending to compress the fleet. Davis placed third by not going to the shore.

For race three Steve Jeppesen with Ken Maring got the start of the day but hit Smith while rounding the weather mark. Jeppesen dropped out. Smith went on to win followed by Baird. Dan Simmons with Phil Macafee sailed a good race to get third place.

With three firsts Smith looks awfully good to take this regatta. However you cannot count Baird out. Same course for race four. The out going current was better inside on the first leg and outside on the second leg. Simmons got a great start but Baird grabbed the lead and won the race. The remaining Mercs changed places with Bradley second and Simmons third.

The wind at the start was  6 knots and growing. When the race finished the breeze had puffs above 18. The fleet decided to go in. As the day turned out the breeze settled in at about 8-10. Maybe the velocity decision a little premature, but who knows.

Congratulations to Randy Smith for winning the 2012 Joe Logan Regatta. Many thanks to the St Francis YC for doing a fine job conducting the regatta.

2012 Labor Day Regatta

Eleven Mercs entered this historic Merc regatta. The sun came out, the breeze had some holes, but a 6-8 knots with some more serious puffs and pretty good shifts were there all day. Three races of double sausages finishing downwind resulting in plenty of mixed results.

Race one the fleet split with some playing the shifts shore, others offshore. The winners were just the fastest. Doug Baird and Mike Dick played the entire bay and had a win. Hal and Anne McCormack were over early at the start, played the shifts and worked back to second. Dave West and Chris Kreuger placed third.

Race two had West fast going to the shore. He led all the way, but was challenged by second place finisher Randy Smith and John Hayes. Pax Davis and Dave Morris were close behing for third Race three was tight. West took the lead and was first at leeward mark. Davis got by him and lead all way close to the finish. Bill and Katy Warden were running closer to the shore on the last run to the finish. Meanwhile West was in a jibing battle with Davis. Worden, running down the inside placed first by a second or two over West, West beat Davis by a second or two. Great one design racing!

Day two, race four. The breeze was up with a nice sunny morning over Carmel Bay. However the fog was moving in and as a result the wind dropped to about 6-8 knots. With the fog direction was also fairly steady. Same courses as day one,  double sausages finishing downwind. Baird and West were into a little war. Both stayed offshore with the wind. Baird was able off West the entire race to win and move within two points of West. Jack and Patti McAleer had a battle with several Mercs, finishing third. WIth the fog slowly moving in race five was the normal strategy head for the shore. Davis did and it payed off. However with West on his tail downwind got by and went on to win the regatta. Davis finished and third place for the regatta. McAleer was third in the race. Baird was trying different things to get by West, but to no avail. He finished in second place in the regatta. Myron Erickson with Peter Baldwin won the Silver Fleet.

Many thanks to Dick Clark for organizing and conducting the races. Charlie Kurtman and son David set the marks and Charlie also cooked the dinner! This year he added albacore to the menu which was a big hit. Charles Jacobsen supplied his beautiful 80 foot power boat for the regatta signal boat.

2012 Huntington Lake Regatta

On a beautiful day, 28 Mercurys raced two races with the breeze up to 14 knots in the morning and a little lighter in the afternoon. As usual the courses are a full windward leeward with another shorter windward leeward leg and finish on the wind. There are different thoughts of where on the starting line one should start. Some sailors always go off the pin to get to the south shore usually with little lift in the breeze. Some like to find a hole in the middle of the line for a clear air start, especially if they are good drag racers ( boat speed). Those that start on the weather side are usually looking for some north in the wind.

Race one was very tight racing, but it was Dave West with Chris Krueger starting from the pin and holding off Bill and Katie Worden get the two top spots. Doug Baird with Chris Messano, starting from the north end of the line placed third. Chris Raab with Kenny Dair were fourth ahead of Steve Jeppsen with Ken Maring who placed fifth.

Race two had West doing his thing again and earning another first place. Raab moved up to second with Baird getting another third. Worden stays in the hunt with a fourth place. Pat and Brendan Bradley moved up to fifth place. At the end of day one, with one more race in the three race regatta, West was leading with two points followed by Worden, Raab and Baird with six points. Pat Bradley is fifth with twelve points.

Day two, the third and final race of the regatta. The course was the long weather leg, the run two thirds of the way down the lake, a short weather leg and the run to the leeward mark finishing on the wind. Randy and Kathryn Smith did an horizon job on the fleet. Smith usually races the Chicago-Mac with his family in July, but the late date for this regatta made it possible for him to attend. He was followed by Baird, Pat Bradley, West and Mac Kilpatrick with Jim Taylor in the 12-14 kn breeze.

West won the regatta and the Bill Bradley Perpetual Trophy, his second time. Baird was second, Raab third, Smith fourth and Pat Bradley, fifth. The Silver Fleet was won by Greg and Andy Goodman followed by Drake Baldwin with Dave Morris, sailing Walter Smith’s Merc. Tom and Laura Priest were third.

 The Hart Nunes Regatta 2012

The Hart Nunes Regatta for Mercurys was held today at the San Francisco YC. The course was set up deep in Richardson Bay in the lee of Sausalito. This was one of the first courses for the class when it was started in 1939. Due to the width of the bay and the depth of the water, a one mile weather leg was set up.

It was a beautiful morning in Belvedere at the SF YC. Class Measurer Dave West set up the diagrams to measure new sails as the fleet waited for the tide to come in a bit. The fleet was towed around Belvedere Point to the race area. The breeze was very light at the start. Later it went lighter until finally totally going away.

No racing for the ten Mercs that entered. A large part of the group stayed for an early dinner. Being that conversation was not about the days racing, they most likely discussed the forth coming Huntington Lake Regatta and 2012 Nationals. These two events will take place in three weeks.  See you at Huntington!

Inverness Yacht Club Half Hog Regatta

June 3, 2012

Five intrepid Mercury owners traveled with their crews to Inverness Yacht Club to race their Mercuries on Sunday, June 3rd.  For those of you who don’t know, Inverness is a beautiful small town on Tamales Bay, just northeast of San Francisco, about an hour’s drive from the Golden Gate Bridge.  The town sits on Tamales Bay and is landlocked by the Point Reyes National Seashore. Tamales Bay is a long, narrow finger of the Pacific Ocean (about 10 miles long by ¾ of a mile wide), with the Point Reyes NS on its western shore and sparsely populated Marin County farm land to the east.  Of all the beautiful places we Mercury sailors get to race each year, none is more beautiful than Tamales Bay.

Due to the beauty of the area, and the ample hiking and eating opportunities, Dana Russell and his son Kane in (#538), Mark and Liz Chandler (#524), and Myron Erickson (#565) and his wife Nancy all arrived in town the day before, the Russells and Chandlers all the way from Monterey. All reported having had a great day and a good dinner before retiring to a wide range of available housing in the area.

This is the second time the Mercs have sailed out of IYC in its Half Hog regatta, a race that goes half way up to Hog Island and then back down to the start/finish line off the club pier.  It’s approximately a six mile race, three upwind and three down.  The starting line was crowded with International 110’s, Flying Scotts, and assorted other boats from the IYC fleet.  The starboard end had a significant favor as a right shift dominated the starting sequence.

Myron Erickson, with Jeff Holder (#565) won the pin with Dave West and Pat Richardson aboard Space Invader (#429) to leeward. West had less speed than Erickson and so was quickly rolled by several 110’s and pinned on the left side of the course.  Erickson and the remaining Mercs - Mark and Liz Chandler’s main halyard splice parted while they were rigging so Death And Glory (#524) had jib-only spectators at the start - tacked to port to take advantage of the better pressure on the right.  West got lucky, though, and picked up a left shift along the western shore giving him a healthy lead at the first cross about a half mile up the three mile weather leg.

Erickson tacked to port in West’s wake on the favorable shift he was riding, as did Mike Bilafer (guest skipper) and Paul Mueller (owner and crew) aboard Loco 2 (#461) to leeward of Erickson.  Having gained so much on that side, West was antsy to protect the left.  When a larger boat began to roll him to weather, he tacked to starboard, thereby sailing out of the prevailing 10-15 knot westerly and into a hole.  Erickson and Bilafer, moving well, continued on port and by the time West tacked back to port and escaped the hole, Erickson had him handily and Bilafer would have been able to cross him.

Tossing fate to the wind a second time, West went back to starboard in search of the fabled port lift along the western shore and this time found it – being on the inside of a 15-20 degree progressive left shift put him back in the lead.  Meanwhile, Dana Russell with his 13-year-old son Kane as crew (#538) was keeping pace just behind and below Mueller.  The boats rounded the weather mark with both crew on the rail, as they had been for the whole top half of the weather leg, more or less evenly spaced, each boat with breathing room on what became a blustery and enjoyably long run to the finish.  The final finish order was the same as at the weather mark: West, Erickson, Bilafer, Russell.

After putting the boats away Mueller and Russell hit the road for home while the West, Erickson and Chandler teams enjoyed some liquid refreshment and some sausages with the other IYC small boaters before doing the same.  Everyone reported having a good time, enjoying this special venue with its great natural beauty, exceptional sailing (12-18 knot shifty breezes and flat water) and historic facilities (IYC is celebrating its 100th Anniversary in 2012). All five skippers look forward to future opportunities to sail at IYC.

Special thanks to Liz Chandler for the photos.

2012 Memorial Day Regatta at Alamitos Bay YC

This was the second year that the Mercs attended this regatta. Last year we had a nice fleet, but this year other regattas both north and south depleted the fleet with on five boats entered in the regatta.

On race day, Tom Priest ended up at home ill, but the other four boats raced two races on Saturday. As the breeze got up to about 20 knots in teh afternoon the fleet came in early. Mike and Kristen Burch won the first race. Eric Conn and Don Shirley won the second race.

The Mercs sailed only one race on Sunday as the fleet. Conn won this race and also the regatta.

CInco De Mayo Regatta

Nine boats were greeted Saturday with bright warm sunny skies, very light breezes and a lumpy sea. Both Doug Baird and Hal McCormack found the conditions to their liking with Doug getting two first and a second and Hal with two seconds and a first.  That evening dInner and drinks followed at Cody's under the rising super moon.

Warm sunny skies again greeted the fleet Sunday. Good news was the breeze was a little more consistent annd the seas had flattened making for more enjoyable sailing for the day. Doug and Hal both won one race each on Sunday but in the end Doug ahead by one point for the regatta win. Many thanks to the SBSC and RC Dave Bernal for a very smoothly run regatta that kept us racing all day long in the light conditions.
