Mercury Class Yacht Racing Association

Eleven Mercurys raced the final day of the series. Sunny, 70 plus degrees and a relative smooth water. The breeze got up to 7 kts, but was mostly lower during the day, but subtle shifts. The course was set up off of Lovers Point with a current running towards the ocean.

Race one was a twice around windward-leeward, finishing downwind in an dying wind. There was a very long starting line. The advantage was to start on the pin and go inshore. Bill and Katie Worden did just that, building a lead that would win the race. The rest of the fleet tacked too soon and did not get the same wind. Doug Baird with Kate Conway worked their way through the fleet to place second. Jim and Kathy Bradley were third followed by Dave Morris with Jared January. Pax Davis with Aaron Lee got the fifth spot. With race 12 in the series completed, there would be 4 discards. This tighten the standings.

Race two was a single W/L, finishing downwind. The fleet went to the shore, but that was not to be. Those that took the port tack found some breeze and it payed off. Baird and Morris were in a dual with Baird winning and Morris second. Davis was third, followed by Bradley and West.

Race three was the double W/L, finishing downwind. The first lap had the fleet bunched up with most favored shore side. On the second leg the outside payed off. The run to the finish, places changed again. Baird won and was followed by Morris again. Bradley did a very good downwind leg and moved up several places to third. John Mowry with Mark Gibbs placed fourth with Lyn and Odile Hines in the fifth spot.

If you look closely at the results you will see that Bradley was very consistant and had few bad races, as a result not too many big discards. Where as both West and Morris had a couple of big ones. The result, a tie for first with Bradley and Morris. Congratulations to Jim Bradley, as he broke the tie with more first places. The Silver fleet was won by Lyn Hines.

Many thanks to the MPYC for conducting the Perry Cup Series and the National Championship as they were in a construction year on
their clubhouse. Dick Clark and his crew of Jim Womble and Chip Wood. did their usual fine job of managing the race course.
