The Weather Mark
September 2016
Thanks to a lot of work by our inland sailors, Pat Bradley, Peter Baldwin and others, Huntington was filled with plenty of water for the annual Huntington Lake Regatta. The lake also hosted the Mercury Class Championship Regatta. With twenty nine entries Huntington Lake finally seemed happy again, it’s longest standing sailing class had returned to celebrate and compete.

Here is a great idea from Larry Nelson, MCYRA VP, and owner of #548. Each yacht club has newsletter either printed and/or online. The Mercury Class would benefit if an occasional bit of news or even a picture where included in various class member’s newsletters.

Close call. I was putting my mast away after the class championships in Alameda. A terminal for one of the upper shrouds simply fell off in my hand. Another mishap happened to a top skipper when his main sheet broke in the middle while approaching the weather mark. In both cases the gear has been replaced but the lesson remains.

GPS Tracks...
The MCYRA Executive Committee approved for 2016 a trial period for competitors to use a GPS device to record courses sailed while racing. Off the water skipper's can analyze and share the GPS data. In GPS speak this is creating “track” of the course you sailed including direction, speed and time.

The Mercury class is off to a great start this year. By now you have received your 2016 MCYRA Yearbook. Close inspection of Fleet Member Listings will find 6 new boat owners. Some have bought active boats and a few are restoring boats. Please welcome these new members to the Mercury family.
